 Thank You

For Being A Friend

For the first time in at least 18 months my outdoor crew and I got back out into the world and I’ve got some people to thank for that.

First and foremost…thank you for listening…we are nothing without you.

Second, thank you to the folks at Harmonie Park, the Pastoria brothers Brian and Mark…and Julie and Bill and everybody else whose names I either can’t remember at the moment or am not sure want to be named at this point.

Thank you to my crew on site, Ray Templin and Theresa Hebert. You did a stellar job. You did the best we could with what we had and we stepped off into the unknown with vigor and guts and determination to deliver for everybody who was involved. I absolutely could not have made this happen without you.

Thank you to Joe Nighswonger of The Great Lakes Bow Hunters web site for inviting us in the first place…100,000 kids in the outdoors in 2011...we are behind you!

Thank you to Tom Huggler and the folks at Show Span for giving us the opportunity to do what we do and for your support of my campfire over all these years…Outdoorama was the first outdoor show I ever did and Tom…you were one of the first guests I ever had at my campfire…hopefully we’ll see you at the Woods-n-Water show in Imlay City in the fall.

Thanks to Ken Neely and KD Outdoors for your unwavering support right from the very beginning of our campfire. God bless you and your family and thanks for the booth space this year!

Thanks to our guests: Jim Miller, Mike Pitiglio, Tim Web, Joel Fedorcheck, and Mark Spindler for making the event extra special. Your support of our campfire means much to me!

Our outdoor heritage here in the Detroit area and Michigan is very important to me. It helped shaped me into the person I am today…it made us the people we are today. The outdoor sports teaches us a respect for one another, the land, the animals and the higher power that made all these things possible.

Our future as a nation is with our kids…take a kid outside to play…it’s the best thing you can do for them and for you.

From the bottom of my heart…Thank you and God bless.

Uncle Bob

 We Are Live & Local

By Bob Bauer

“Bob Bauer’s Outdoor World” web TV is now available! Log on to www.udetroit.com and if you’re not already signed up…do so!

On the front page you will notice a TV screen that is playing the latest program on Udetroit Television. To the right of the screen you will see four (4) tabs marked: On Demand, Schedule, Channels and Chat (which I will discuss another time.)

Click on Channels. You will see a menu of our channels: UDETROIT WEB TV, BORDERS MEDIA CAFE, THE FUNK BROTHERS, U DETROIT RADIO and BOB BAUERS OUTDOOR WORLD. Click on BOB BAUERS OUTDOOR WORLD. Actually you should click on all of them and check them all out…they are all really very good and keep in mind that this is all still in the development stages which means…it’s just going to get better!

Click on the BOB BAUERS OUTDOOR WORLD tab and you will see my outdoor web TV channel. This will be updated on a regular basis and will include some of my favorite “outdoor music”. Every outdoorsman I ever knew has a tape or a CD that they like to plug in and listen to their way to their next adventure. I hope you will share yours with me so I can post them here along with mine for everyone to enjoy…whatever get’s you jacked up to get out there and do whatever it is that you do out “where the pavement ends”. There will also be clips from my shows past and present. Some will be actual videos and some will be slide presentations that will fit the particular subject you are listening to. There will also be product demonstrations of the latest and greatest gear available…find out what’s hot and what’s not. (Hello…sponsors!)

There will also be videos from professional outdoorsmen AND some videos of your own stuff! I have the final say of what makes the cut and what doesn’t…period. It’s my show…the buck, so to speak, stops here. I am responsible for all content that runs on “Bob Bauers Outdoor World“ Any comments, suggestions…talk to me.

And just so you know…there will be kill shots and dead critters  shown. We hunt with guns and bows…something is bound to die so if you have a problem with that…be forewarned. However, you won’t see rivers of blood and body parts strewn everywhere…not my style. At this point let me say this is not an all male exclusive club. It’s about everyone’s enjoyment in the outdoors. We like to focus on introducing women and children to our Outdoor World because they are the future of our sport. We like to encourage the guys to take their families with them. I hear from guys…and women, all the time “I don’t get enough face time with my family!”. Here’s a thought…go together! And by the way, when I say outdoorsmen I mean the ladies as well.

If you are an armature photographer and would like to learn how to get up close and personal with the wildlife you should be tuning us in as well. We will teach you our skills…you can’t go through the woods like Pattons 3rd Army OR smelling like a French perfume factory and expect to get close to the wildlife…there’s a reason they are called “wildlife”…they’re wild!

Have I mentioned you’ll be able to call into the show as well?

I will address prospective advertisers in another blog. It’s a new day boys and girls…you don’t have to spend your money anymore and hope to hit your target demo…we can bring them directly to you. That whole “scatter shot” thing…“run it up the flag pole and see if anyone salutes” tactic that “terrestrial” employs doesn’t work any more and is hopelessly outdated. And just because you’re on Facebook or you “tweete” doesn’t mean you are dialed in.
Call us at Harmonie Park Media and get the lowdown.

All that brings me to this. I’ve been telling you for months now that we are “close to launch”. “Bob Bauers Outdoor World” will air it’s fist series of programs live @ www.udetroit.com on Saturday, February 26th from the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi at Outdoorama. The first show will air from 12 noon to 2pm, eastern time, from the Great Lakes Bowhunters booth. The second show will air from 4 to 6pm the same day, from the KD Outdoors booth.

Hunting, fishing, cooking demonstrations, product demonstrations…all live as it happens. Both shows will be recorded and will run on my web TV page @ www.detroit.com so that you can see the segments whenever you want to.

“Bob Bauers Outdoor World” is back! It’s live, it’s local on the Bob Bauer Outdoor World web TV channel @ www.udetroit.com.
Live and local…it’s what we do!

Coming soon…my daily radio show, 2 to 6pm, Monday through Friday, “Paradise Valley to Motown…The Rock Starts Here.”. The U Detroit Radio Network…We Rock…No Lie…live!

Happy Valentines Day!

Love,
Uncle Bob

Kayaker, 64, completes marathon paddle across Atlantic

By: Pete Thomas, GrindTV.com

Aleksander Doba, sapped of strength but nonetheless jubilant, paddled ashore in northeast Brazil on Wednesday afternoon, completing a transatlantic kayaking expedition that lasted almost 99 days and spanned 3,320 miles.

It's believed to have been the longest-ever solo-kayaking voyage, in terms of time spent at sea. He spent Wednesday afternoon and evening being checked by doctors and sleeping. On Thursday the 64-year-old Polish adventurer, thickly bearded and disheveled but appearing remarkably fit, told a small gathering in the remote fishing community of Acaraú, that after a little more rest he'd like to climb back in and paddle to the United States.

Doba left last Oct. 26 from Dakar in west Africa, aboard a customized 23-foot sea kayak, which is only only 39 inches wide. This was his home for 98 days and 20 hours.

Three others have kayaked across the Atlantic: Franz Romer in 1928; Hannes Lindemann in 1956, and Peter Bray in 2001. But none of those expeditions was directly from continent to continent (they utilized offshore islands), and none of those paddlers was a senior citizen.

"He's 64 years old! The physical challenge would have broken men half his age," Jeff Moag, editor of Canoe & Kayak magazine, said of Doba. "The amount of will power it took him to keep going is amazing. To any of us who have done a long paddling expedition, it's humbling."

Canoe & Kayak followed the odyssey from the outset. It was plagued almost from start to finish by storminess and unfavorable currents. The paddler, whose excursion was plotted via a global satellite positioning unit, covered 680 miles in a straight line before conditions began to work relentlessly against him.

In early January his son, Chez Doba, emailed Canoe & Kayak's Conor Mihell and stated to the reporter: "After going in circles for over a month, being stormed on almost every day, being accompanied by barracuda and sharks, who wouldn't be tired?"

Doba's vessel has a small forward compartment in which he napped when conditions allowed. His desalination unit stopped functioning automatically on Jan. 11, making it difficult to obtain drinking water; since then he relied largely on gathering rainwater. His meager freeze-dried food supply was supplemented occasionally with fresh fish. At times he had to maneuver over waves measuring 20-plus feet.

Doba, an expert whitewater kayaker, carried a satellite phone and Tweeted sporadically. One of his early Tweets: "Since the beginning I see a lot of sharks. Often they surface, but sometimes they stay a few meters underwater. I can only splash, no swimming!"

His journey was close to the equator where, he informed his followers, "It's extremely hot. I sleep about 2-3 hours per night. During the day it's impossible."

Doba, who speaks almost no English, also relayed messages to his son, which were posted on his blog. On Monday, as a powerful south wind shoved him off-track to the northwest and threatened to delay landing, this was posted on his blog: "I'm very tired. I dream to finally finish, wherever it will be. I'm afraid that the south winds push me so I have to paddle for many days. No! I want dry land as soon as possible."

It turned out to be a two-day delay, 50 miles beyond where he had hoped to land. Those two days, Doba assured, were like an eternity.
Bob ~ I recently had a conversation with a friend about heros and legends. In todays society we are all to ready to brand somebody a legend or a hero wheather they deserve it or not. I'm not saying this guy is either but he inspires people to "live the dream", seek a higher ground, "be all you can be". As a child I read the adventures of the Kon-Tiki expidition by Thor Heyerdahl...to this day I love a good adventure and have had many throughout my life and times...it's what I live for. Not familiar with Thor Hyerdahl and Kon-Tiki? Look it up! It's what inspired me to be more...to leave it all out on the field. My greatest fear in life is to be laying on my deathbed and think..."MAN...I wish I'd have done THAT!". Life begins where the pavement ends! Now...go get you some!
