The Who announces "Quadrophenia" tour, Detroit date
The Who will return to the Detroit area for the first time in November, playing its 1973 rock opera "Quadrophenia" and other hits on Nov. 24 at Joe Louis Arena.
It marks the first time the group has played in Detroit proper since a special performance at the Masonic Temple Theatre in 1978.
The British duo is playing 37 North American dates beginning Nov. 1 in Sunrise, Fla., with a second leg starting in January of 2013. Tickets go on sale to the general public at 10 a.m. July 27, while Who fan club members will have early access to tickets July 20-22 and American Express cardholders will have access to a pre-sale July 23-26.
During a press conference on Wednesday, July 18, guitarist and composer Pete Townshend said that he and singer Roger Daltrey have been "trying to find something we can do together" since last touring in 2008, after working on individual projects during the interim. "We've been anxious to work together before we drop dead," said Townshend, 67, who's been writing a memoir as well as another musical concept piece called "Floss." " 'Quadrophenia' is something we both felt we could get together on and look at again."
Daltrey, 68, added that, "What's great about doing ('Quadrophenia') now is it's still a work in progress. Hopefully it will keep developing, and we might even get it into some up-to-date, modern show."
Townshend, Daltrey and the Who's late bassist John Entwistle took "Quadrophenia" on the road in 1997-98, including shows at the Palace of Auburn Hills and the DTE Energy Music Theatre. Daltrey said this year's show would again feature an expanded band but it "won't be quite as big" as the previous tour and would not include guest singers for specific roles in the piece.
In addition to the tour, a documentary about the making of the album, "The Who: Quadrophenia -- Can You See the Real Me? The Story Behind the Album" will show in movie theaters for one night only at 8 p.m. July 24. Theater locations and ticket details can be found at www.FathomEvents.com.
Daltrey and Townshend are also slated to performing at the closing ceremony of the Summer Olympic Games on Aug. 12 in London, for which Daltrey says he's produced a special piece combining several Who songs.
